A Backyard Ultra isn’t your standard running event. It’s a form of endurance event invented by Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell in which you see how far you can push yourself.… and we’ve brought it to North Yorkshire The concept is simple.
Participants run a minimum of 4.167 miles on the hour, every hour, until there is one runner standing.
Each lap starts on the hour and be completed in less than 60 minutes.
When each lap is completed, the remaining time within the hour is typically used to recover for the next lap.
Participants complete hourly laps until there is only one runner still going.
It is this runner who is crowned the one and only The Sting Backyard Ultra winner!
Typically, participants who run a Backyard Ultra, smash their distance personal best.
All runners will set off and start together at 12PM.
They must have completed the whole lap within 60 minutes to be ready to set off again at 1PM, and again at 2PM, and so on.
The quicker participants complete a lap, the longer they will have to rest but the faster they complete the lap, the more tired they’ll be.
There is no minimum distance or minimum number of laps you need to complete. Technically, everyone other than the winner is classed as a “Did Not Finish” (DNF). This is a race against yourself to see how many laps you can push yourself to achieve.
Included
Not Included
Except to use the toilet, participants may not leave the course until each lap is completed.
You can not visit your pitch or be assisted in anyway after you start a lap or you will be disqualified. This includes handed or handing off bottles or food or kit.
No non-participants on the course or starting corral (including eliminated runners).
No personal aid during a lap (common aid stations are allowed).
Each lap must be completed within an hour to be counted … including the final lap.
No artificial aids (including trekking poles).
Slower runners must allow passes.
Participants must complete each lap before the clock reaches the next hour, for example 9:59:59 is ok. 10:00:00 is DNF.
As participants make it back to the corral, they must show their race number at the Race HQ Gazebo to have their lap recorded. Race numbers must be worn at all times on chest.
A warning is given 3, 2, and 1 minute prior to each lap start.
You're all winners to us but the ultimate winner is the last participant to complete a lap on their own, a solo lap that no-one else completes.
If a participant refuses to start a final lap the winner must do one clear solo lap to be said winner.
If two runners are out on a lap, and one is timed out, then the participant who makes it back within the hours wins without doing an extra lap.
All other runners are technically classed as a DNF “Did Not Finish” because the length of the race is determined by the last runner.
The race is open ended. It is over when participants quit. The distance of the race is defined by the distance covered by the winner.
If no runner can complete one more lap than anyone else, there is no winner.
The only items that are compulsory are:
We will ask participants to wear their torch when it begins to get dark or if we deem it unsafe to race without it at other times.
Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.
Keep in mind, it is mandatory to wear your race number (we will provide pins).
No poles or other similar walking/running supports allowed.
Sorry, no pets allowed during the run or the corral, however pets are allowed in public areas of the campsite.
